Sweden is well known for its model of local self-government. As one of the main institutions for Swedish local selfgovernment, SALAR represents all of Sweden’s 290 municipalities and 20 county councils/regions. The Association has existed for over a hundred years and strives to strengthen local self-government and the development of regional and local democracy.
Internationally, SALAR is very active both at an EU level and beyond. The organisation has an office in Brussels and strong connections to other institutions and networks, such as the Council of Europe, the Committee of the Regions and CEMR.
